年终演出 Carry On
Despite the difficulties presented by shelter-in-place orders and social distancing measures, SI’s student artists remained undaunted and found ways to share their love and passion through performance. Truly, the show must go on!

We decided to try a virtual orchestra after the shelter-in-place started, and after seeing the cool projects professional orchestra were doing (like the orchestra in Rotterdam) during this time. Because of the different internet speeds we had to do a “lip-dub” of our recordings we made individually at home. It was quite a project! Galen Green, our jazz director, mixed all of it for us into the finished product you see. We would have performed the 1812 Overture at our Spring Concert. The zoom performance was a fun way to keep us all thinking about the music and practicing even though we were at home.

“Pippin” was scheduled as the Spring Musical. I was looking for a way to keep the kids excited about the show. At the time of producing this we were still possibly going to perform. These videos are tricky - they are not what they seem to be. We first took the recording of the orchestra that we recorded prior to the school closure so the kids could practice. We then had each kid record his voice only to the orchestra recording. Robert Christian III '20 took all of the tracks and made them into one. We then sent this to all the kids in the show and had them lip sync to their own voice and video record themselves. Then Senior Finn Rolings had the huge task of making them all fit and looking like it was a zoom meeting. Now that the show has closed this is one of the last performances we have from everyone.

In a usual dance setting, the students would gather in Wiegand, I would instruct in front of the mirror, and the choreography would be taught over the course of multiple rehearsals. Our spring show is dedicated to seniors who choreographed individual works to be performed by fellow students. To combine all of those elements together, I created movement to the chorus of the song with collaborative dance moves from the senior choreographers. I asked the choreographers which moment from their piece they cherish the most. Then, I combined those movements together with an additional piece from myself. I hosted a zoom call rehearsal for the dancers where they could learn the movement in real time. If this option wasn't available, I created step by step videos for them to watch and learn the choreography from.
This creates a challenge in many ways. The students needed to adapt the choreography from mirrored cameras, lagging videos from zoom, working in a single rehearsal, and filming in spaces that do not mimic the space of a theater. I asked the students to then film themselves performing the combination as well as incorporate improvised movements that resembled their feelings about these current times in addition to some silly moments that make them feel like themselves. Videos were sent to myself which I then organized and edited to multiple selections. Those selections were transferred to iMovie and spliced together by myself. I made sure that everyone had a moment within the video to showcase their passion and talents. I also wanted to make sure the senior choreographers were featured within their last performance.
Watching each clip separately and then as one cohesive dance brought emotions across the board. I was grateful to have such passionate students willing to share their art among these difficult times. I was solemn knowing that the dancers would not have a chance to perform on the stage together one last time for the year. I experienced feelings of hope in witnessing that my students want to keep dance in their lives amidst hardship. And last, I was extremely proud and humbled to call them my students witnessing their generosity and commitment during this time.

Before the quarantine, the SI Jazz Band had prepared a lot of really cool music. It was disappointing not to get the opportunity to perform this music for you. Instead, the students worked really hard and put this video together, as the culmination of this unusual semester, and a final document of a fantastic group of musicians, many of whom are are graduating. We really hope you enjoy it!

Music Ministry is a community that is held together by the love they have for each other, God, and our SI community. This song, “Hold Us Together,” has become an SI classic, reminding us that love conquers all. Thank you to Music Ministry for sharing their gifts and talents every single week and a special thanks to all the Senior Music Ministers for their amazing mentorship, leadership, and friendship! AMDG!!!

Music-making is a social act. Even though a virtual choir is no substitute for singing together, we needed to use this time to make something to lift our spirits and lift the spirits of our community. The SI Mixed Chorus and Chamber Singers have both worked so hard and completed beautiful virtual choir projects in the past two months.
